Fall even more in love this year by taking a passionate trip for Valentine’s Day to some of the most romantic places in Europe.

What classifies as ‘Romantic’ can mean something different for everyone. Maybe it’s wandering around the medieval cobblestone streets of a tiny village, exploring the untouched nature of Europe, or relaxing at some of the most stunning Mediterranean beaches with the bluest waters. However you may define a romantic place, one thing is for sure, Europe is filled with them, and the diversity of the continent ensures that there’s somewhere romantic to explore this Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day is the holiday to celebrate love. Whether that be love for your partner, friends, or self-love. These romantic destinations are great for couples, of course, but don’t be shy to take yourself to any of the following destinations.

Traditional Dutch architecture along the canals
Geithoorn, Netherlands

1. Giethoorn, Netherlands

No cars to be found in this Dutch town! That’s right, the car-free town of Giethoorn is only accessible by small boats that weave through the beautiful canals. And we think that being car-free only adds to the charm of this little village! Admire the architecture of the traditional Dutch houses along the canals, and appreciate the fairytale-like vibe of the village. All the houses are unique, with small intricate details you’ll notice that set them apart from each other,  so you’ll never get bored cruising down the canals and noticing the details in the buildings.

This is a great stop for couples for their Valentine’s trip, because what is more romantic than hopping in a small little boat together, cuddling up, and enjoying the beauty. You can also learn more about how life was back 100 years ago in the village and its interesting, unique history at the Museum Giethoorn ‘t Olde Maat Uus, an original historical farmhouse that has been preserved, with exhibits showing the lifestyle and the work they did to make a living, such as, unsurprisingly, making boats!

Mid-Range - Hotel B&B d’Olde Smidse

Towering rocks over green forests seclude a monastery with an orange rooftop
Meteora, Greece

2. Meteora, Greece

If you’re looking to be completely immersed in nature this Valentine’s Day, and like a bit of adventure, take a trip to Meteora. This is great for couples and solo travellers alike, to do some hiking, take in some incredible views, and if you’re travelling alone, it’s the perfect spot to have some empowering time for self-reflection and self-care. Meteora is an impressive rock formation in central Greece that stands out from anything you’ve ever seen before. Many movies and TV shows have been filmed there, such as Game of Thrones, and once you’re walking between these incredible formations, you’ll understand why directors want to use this in their filming.

The most impressive part of Meteora is the monasteries that are perched on top of the rocks. It’s incredible to see, and unbelievable that it was even possible to build them. The nearby town of Kalambaka offers many tours of the monasteries. Sign up for a hiking tour that will lead you to some of the most incredible viewpoints and will take you to one or two of the most famous monasteries in the area, Monastery of Great Meteoron and Varlaam Monastery. Due to February weather, it most likely won’t be an issue, but do note that the monasteries enforce strict dress code, such as no tank tops and no shorts for both men and women.

Where to Stay

Affordable rooms located in the heart of Kastraki, a traditional Greek village near Meteora.

Mid-Range - Dellas Boutique Hotel

A stone-built hotel with views of the Meteora Rocks and elegantly decorated rooms.

Medieval buildings of Brugge surround the low canals
Bruges, Belgium

3. Bruges, Belgium

The small medieval city of Bruges is a perfect one to spend with your partner this Valentine’s Day… And if you’re a fan of chocolate on Valentine’s Day, there’s no better place for you than here! Walking down the main old town of Bruges that is lined with stores, you’ll notice every other one is a Belgian chocolate shop (accredited as the best chocolate in the world), and they have a ton of cute Valentine themed chocolates. Stop by Bruges’ favourite museum, Choco-Story, the Chocolate Museum. Learn the interesting history of how Belgium became chocolate heaven, and about the production industry. At the end of the museum, grab a box and share them with your partner at one of the many benches overlooking the stunning canals, or the incredible Markt, taking in some of the most stunning architecture in the area.

One of the highlights of Bruges is hopping in one of the small boats that take you down the canals, offering splendid views of different city monuments, like the Church of Our Lady Bruges and St. John’s Hospital from the water. Learn about the city’s history, and take in the beautiful views with your loved one. A trip on the canals only adds to the romantic charm of the stunning city.

Panoramic view on a sunny day of Budapest
Budapest, Hungary

4. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is a well-rounded city, with amazing food and stunning architecture. During the daytime, explore the magical city with your loved one, and stop at some of the most gorgeous spots in the city. Take a wintertime swim together in the famous Szechenyi Bath. The warm thermal waters will make you feel like you’re somewhere warmer in February, just for a bit, surrounded by some beautiful buildings.

One of the best ways to take in the sights of the gorgeous city is to go on a River Cruise and there’s no more romantic way to do this than by taking your partner out to a themed Valentine’s Day dinner cruise,  2 pianists will have a battle to provide great entertainment for the guests. The whole tour is romantic, but we strongly recommend paying the extra price for a window seat so you can get the best views! If you plan to drink with dinner, there is also an option to add unlimited drink consumption. One more thing, if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions, make sure to reach out in advance so that accommodations can be made for your Valentine’s meal!

Budapest also makes a great place to visit on Valentine’s Day with a group of friends. Galentine’s Day, anyone? The vibrant city has a wide variety of nightlife and quirky ruin bars that are fun to check out with a group of friends while appreciating the platonic love you all have for each other!

Orange yellow and red make up Sintra's gorgeous castle
Sintra, Portugal

5. Sintra, Portugal

Sintra is a great place for some self-love if you aren’t travelling as a couple, but still looking to celebrate the holiday. From great food and amazing history, you’ll have a great time exploring Sintra whether you’re alone or with a partner. Of all the castles in Europe, Palacio da Pena is one of the most colourful, unique, and fairytale-like ones that you’ll encounter. Skip the crazy lines and buy your entrance tickets in advance while spending your Valentine’s trip exploring one of the most breathtaking palaces in the world. Don’t skip out on the quieter Quinta da Regaleira, a stunning quinta which is a Portuguese word for ‘estate’. The lush gardens surrounding the quinta make it a romantic place to stroll around and explore in Sintra.

Sintra’s town is often overlooked, as most visit the area on a day trip from Lisbon, and don’t actually stay the night in Sintra. But you definitely should stay here for a relaxing, romantic trip! The town is very quaint, with colourful Portuguese architecture, and is filled with lovely shops carrying traditional Portuguese products to choose from.

Insider tip: When in Sintra you must try a Queijada, a pastry typical to the area made with cheese. You’ll see lines in front of Casa Piriquita, the most famous bakery in the area. If you want to surprise your loved one with a little Valentine’s chocolate, pick up brigadeiro from Casa Piriquita, which is a rich chocolate dessert made with condensed milk and covered in chocolate sprinkles. Yes, it is Brazilian at a Portuguese bakery, but their brigadeiro was some of the best that I had in all of Portugal.

Where to Stay

Budget-Friendly - Moon Hill Hostel

Perfect for its proximity to Sintra’s old town, with modern, shared rooms.

Mid-Range - Chalet Saudade

A romantic hotel whose decorations are reminiscent of the 19th century.

Sunset over the river in Bordeaux creates orange skies that reflect off the waters
Bordeaux, France

7. Bordeaux, France

On the most romantic holiday in the world, you could be with the love of your life, sipping on some of the best wines in the whole world… not to mention the beautiful scenery of the Bordeaux region, and the beautiful, riverside city. Sounds like an incredible way to spend the holiday! Since the vineyards of Bordeaux are in the region outside of the city and require a car to get to, have a stress-free trip and go on a wine tasting tour. You’ll visit some of the best vineyards, and not have to worry about limiting the amount of wine you try since it includes transfer to and from Bordeaux.

Bordeaux isn’t just about wine though, so don’t be fooled! The city of Bordeaux is filled with beautiful sights to visit. Spend the holiday walking around and viewing some of the most iconic landmarks the city has to offer, such as the Place de la Bourse, a classic example of French architecture that has been listed as a UNESCO Heritage Sight. 8. Paris, France

It wouldn’t be a true list of where to visit for Valentine’s Day without mentioning Paris, right? Marvel at each other in the city of love, and don’t overthink being cliché. Let’s be real, it’s not a Valentine’s trip to Paris if you’re not sharing a kiss in front of the Eiffel Tower, one of the most romantic places in the world. Take a lovely walk together through the Luxembourg Gardens, you’ll feel alone together due to the tranquillity and quietness. While the plants aren’t in bloom yet in February, due to the immense beauty in the gardens, you won’t even notice they're gone.

Foodie couples on Valentine’s Day, there’s a ton for you in Paris. Of course, Valentine’s Day is notorious for sweets, so try Le Loir dans la Théière, the most giant (and delicious) lemon meringue pie that you’ll try. If you don’t have a sweet tooth, delve into some of the rich French gastronomy. Paris is filled with romantic restaurants offering special meals for Valentine’s Day to get the best taste of French cuisine.

Colorful Alpine buildings along the lake are lit up and surrounded by mountains
Hallstatt, Austria

9. Hallstatt, Austria

Often called the most romantic village in Austria, and even the most beautiful small town in all of Europe -the beauty of Hallstatt is undeniable, despite its small size. If you’re lucky, during the winter months, you’ll catch some snowfall on the alpine town. Declared a UNESCO Heritage Site, the history is impressive and not talked about in your average history book. So come open to learning more about the rich Austrian culture and alpine history here.

Along the lakeshore, many companies offer boat tours around Lake Hallstatt. This is a must! You get the most awesome views of the little town, backed by snowy, green mountains. Admire what’s in front of you, the beautiful UNESCO site and your partner, and you’ll feel nothing but love on the special day. After your boat tour, discover the Central Square, which has cute artisan shops selling typical products from the area, and stop by some of the landmarks that you saw from the lake, like the Hallstatt Lutheran Church, the striking church that is an unmissable detail of Hallstatt’s skyline.

10. Prague, Czech Republic

The enchanting capital is a lovely destination for a romantic getaway. Something about the city’s architecture, history, and overall vibe makes it so intriguing, and there’s nothing better to discover the magic of Prague than exploring it with your partner. Get up early and beat the crowds to walk across Charles Bridge together at sunrise, easily one of the most iconic places in the city. Snag a couple of cute selfies for the photo albums before heading over to the Prague Astronomical Clock. On the dot every hour, don’t miss the cute animated figure. If the weather is nice, you can discover some of the best views of the city, along with some of the best greenery, at Letna Park. Spend some alone time away from the crowds and endeavour in nature, without leaving the city.

Pastel buildings and the dramatic Cathedral of Cádiz make up the cities shoreline
Cádiz, Spain - Wikimedia

11. Cádiz, Spain

Cádiz has to be one of Spain’s most underrated cities. From breathtaking architecture along the coastlines and pastel streets, this captivatingly beautiful city is accredited by archaeologists to be the oldest city in Europe. Avenida Campo del Sur has to be one of the most romantic walks in Spain. Along the waterfront, this street has picture-perfect views of some of Cádiz’s most incredible architecture, including the Catedral de Cádiz. Not to mention, the buildings lining the coastline almost appear to be a pastel rainbow. Valentine’s day photoshoot, anyone? Throughout the city, there are a variety of light pink coloured buildings, so if you’re one who likes to colour coordinate on the holidays, why not take a couple of photos for your socials in front of Cádiz’s adorable architecture.

Don’t miss the sunset in Cádiz at Playa de la Caleta. Cádiz stays relatively warm and mild during wintertime, so you may even be able to catch a tan at Playa de la Caleta, and when the sun starts to set, the weather is ideal to steal your partner’s hoodie and cuddle up to take in the gorgeous sunset. The beach even has some incredible historical spots, like Balneario de la Palma, an old exclusive hotel that is no longer used. Surrounding the old hotel, you’ll notice many Spaniards with their loved ones, watching the sunset and popping open a few beers.  Make sure to walk down to Castle of San Sebastian, which literally is in the middle of the ocean, with only a tiny strip of land connecting it to the rest of Cádiz.

Panoramic view of a snowy lake bled, mountain tops filled with snow, and the sunset behind it
Lake Bled, Slovenia

12. Lake Bled, Slovenia

The serenity of Lake Bled is unmatched, especially in the winter months. If you’re lucky, you will get to see the snow collecting on the rooftop of the Assumption of Maria Church on Bled Island, one of the most incredible winter sights in all of Europe, looking straight out of a Disney movie. Another great thing about Lake Bled in the wintertime is the lack of travellers, as the majority of its visitors come during the summer months. Enjoy some peace and quiet and each other’s company while enjoying the lovely lake.

Take the hiking path up to Bled Castle, which is a great sight to visit in itself, the castle being one of the oldest in Slovenia. But the best thing about the walk to Bled Castle is that you get some of the best views over Lake Bled. At night, the path is lit up, so you can even head up to watch the sunset without worries about hiking back down in the dark.

Valletta is a stunning option to stay for couples in Malta who like more of a city life. The unique city feels like a mix of cultures, due to Moorish and Mediterranean influences. For those looking for a quiet, less visited part of Malta, stay in the charming fishing village of Marsaxlokk, or head over to the less visited island of Gozo, for a traditional, local experience, and stay in some of the beautiful Maltese towns, such as Munxar, an unspoilt gem. Birdseye view of Verona, typical Italian architecture on both sides of the river

14. Verona, Italy

As Shakespeare wrote in the Prologue of Romeo and Juliet, “In fair Verona where we lay our scene”. Perhaps it is because the most notorious, timeless romance ever written was set in Verona, or because of its gorgeous Renaissance and Roman architecture along the river, but there is one thing for sure: Verona is incredibly romantic and perfect for lovey-dovey couples to celebrate their relationship. Visit Juliet’s balcony at Juliet’s house to learn more about the famous story, and while the romance between the two was fiction, learn about the actual historical background of the Montagues and Capulets that set the scene for the romance.

Hold hands and enjoy some gelato (yes, even in February you must grab some, trust us when we tell you that it is worth the brain freeze) strolling across the stunning Roman bridge, Ponte Pietra. And to get the best views of the stunning city, take the Funicular up to Castel San Pietro. From there, you’ll catch the best panoramic views of the city, and enjoy some time with your loved one on the stunning ride up.

Ancient ruins alongside the bright turquoise Mediterranean waters
Kos, Greece

15. Kos, Greece

Kos is a Greek Island situated very close to the coast of Turkey, and tends to be one of the warmest Greek Islands during the wintertime. While it won't be swimming and tanning weather most likely, the island is so beautiful that it is worth discovering during the chillier months. And while it may be an unpopular opinion, we think there’s nothing more romantic than sweater weather at the beach. Just more excuses to cuddle up with your partner for the holiday surrounded by beautiful nature!

Agios Stefanos beach combines everything perfect about Greece. The beaches and the history. How many beaches do you come across that have ancient ruins of churches from the 5th-6th century AD? It’s incredible to go from one second admiring the Aegean Sea to the next, stumbling across pieces of ancient history.

Kos is also home to a romantic old town, with winding streets, traditional Greek tavernas, and an abundance of historical homes and ruins you might encounter. The residential population ensures that restaurants and stores will be open, which is hard to find on some Greek Islands during the wintertime.

Where to Stay

Budget-Friendly - Olympia Hotel

A great value-for-money hotel in an optimal location near beaches and the town.

Mid-Range - Orpheus Studios

Orpheus Studios offers a studio all to yourself overlooking the waterfront at a reasonable price point.

Luxury - Chrysoula Hotel

Conveniently located near Kefalos Beach and Agios Stefanos Beach, with a pool and game rooms.
